about

I was just a teenager with a set of drums, supportive parents, cool friends and understanding neighbors. Man we’d practice for hours on hot summer days with the garage doors wide open.

We did indeed play our first gig at the roller rink over on Wheeling Island. Chris Markle with his epic Marsahll half stack and swinging blonde hair on one side of the stage. The ever cool Steve Forro defining the term “stage presence” on the other side.

And the girl. She was real too. And she lived near California.

This lo-fi, indie rock home recording tells the story complete with Brian Wilson harmonies, Iron Maiden references and Cure guitar vibes.

“We were strangers in a strange land…called Reckless Youth.”

Hope you dig,
-jz

lyrics

Maybe I lost it in the sun
But nothing has ever felt so innocent and fun as
power chords on a cheap guitar
And never knowing just how far we had to go

There was this one time in my life
When I reached out and felt the truth
And it cut me like a knife
Now what I’d give to feel that wound
We were a heavy metal garage band…called “Reckless Youth”

We printed up our t-shirts
Then set out to learn some Iron Maiden songs
Our first gig was at the roller rink on the island
Only our friends sang along…and not for long

There was this one time in my life
When I reached out and felt the truth
And it cut me like a knife
Now what I’d give to feel that wound
We were a heavy metal garage band…called “Reckless Youth”

She lived near California she had blonde hair
Spent summers with her uncle across the street
We were so bad she did not care
She loved the music and somehow she loved me

There was this one time in my life
When I reached out and felt the truth
And it cut me like a knife
Now what I’d give to feel that wound
We were a heavy metal garage band…strangers in a strange land...

Joe Zelek Mount Pleasant, Ohio

While Rust Belt songsmith Joe Zelek’s new album Days of the Wild is clearly informed by classic Petty and Springsteen, it’s the combination of Americana and indie rock influences lurking in the corners that ultimately define it as Joe’s most authentic and personal thus far. ... more
